Daphne Elaine Cortez was born on February 15, 1977 in Lenoir, NC. and passed away on April 14, 2025, in Lakeland, FL.
Daphne was one of the most creative people you’d ever meet. You could always catch her cooking, crafting or yapping about her projects in between her zombie books and dirty jokes. She was even writing a book. She wanted to tell her story but now it seems we’re the ones left to tell it.
She had one of the hugest personalities you’d ever come across and loved to show out. She would easily make you her friend seconds after meeting you. She wouldn’t let you feel awkward. She was the first person to break the silence in any room and so many of her kids take after that.
There are endless memorable traits and endless things that will be missed. Your weird text to speech messages, your stories with no endings, your cooking, your jokes, your hug, your kisses, your laugh, your voice, your audio books loud enough for the neighbors to hear, and even your attitude.
She was vibrant & full of life. She had an irresistible charm, an ability to pull others toward her for whatever the reason may have been. She’d make an uncomfortable & wildly inappropriate joke but she’d never make you feel judged or out of place. Her home was your home. She was weird & so being weird was okay, it was accepted, encouraged even.
Daphne didn’t have the easiest life but she made the best with what she had every day. She lived life in a way most would be scared to & if you knew her, you knew her heart was too big for her own sake. She was a beautiful, sensitive soul, & through all of her struggles she loved her family. They meant everything to her & in her own way she never let them forget it.
Daphne is lovingly remembered by her children: Amethyst Cortez, Kiara Retamar, Gabriel Cortez, Pedro Zapata, & Benjimin Zapata.
She also leaves behind three cherished grandchildren: Jonathan Gomez, Joshua Gomez, & Brooklyn Retamar who lovingly called her Elisi.
She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Rich, her mother, Phyllis Good, & her son, Adrian Cortez.
You will be sorrowly missed, We’ll see you in everyday things.
