Arlis Ray Roberts, Jr, Age 79, went to be with the LORD on July 13,2024, in Lakeland, FL. He was born on December 3,1944, in Tampa, FL to Arlis Ray Roberts and Ruth Frances Gardner. He married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary Kirkland, in 1966. Together they had three children. He was preceded in death by his son, Arlis Ray Roberts III. Arlis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rosemary Roberts; two children, Amber Renee Meints (Steve) and Angela Rose Barrand (Lennie); eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Arlis enlisted in the United States army in 1961, and served in the 3rd U. S Infantry, known as “The Old Guard” in Washington DC. The Old Guard is the Army’s official ceremonial unit and escort to the president. served under President John F. Kennedy and his duties included burial detail for fallen, military personnel and Arlington National Cemetery. Upon discharge, he worked in many trades, finally becoming a member of Local 624 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters. He then founded Robert’s Construction Services, employing many family members. His drive and work ethic ensured its success for fifteen years until his health began to fail.
Arlis was a devoted husband, a loving father, provider and protector. He was always willing to help anyone in need. He loved being outdoors, hunting and fishing he enjoyed large family gatherings and making sure the grill and no one’s plate was ever empty. Friends were always welcome. Arlis lived a large, adventurous life, striving to overcome any obstacles that presented itself. Later, as his life activity level changed he especially enjoyed quiet, rainy evenings with his family.
He came to saving faith rather late in life. He loved the LORD deeply and that transformation was clearly evident. Recently he stated he wanted to be with Jesus. After many years and much suffering. He was able to do that on Saturday, July 13.
