James David Gay, lovingly known as “David” or “Papa’s Kettle Corn,” passed away peacefully at home in Zolfo Springs, Florida on February 11, 2025, at the age of 73. Born September 18, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, to JoAnn and H. K. Gay, David lived a life dedicated to service, family, and community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, JoAnn and H. K. Gay, and his brother, Roy Gay. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Suzanne Gay; his brother, Wayne Gay and Flo; his children, Tonya Richardson and Adam, Sarah Richardson, Dawn Beasley and Eddie, Dollene Fields and Joe, Ashley Reed and Jake and David “Buzz” Thomas; and his numerous cherished grandchildren: JoAnn Richardson, Ashley Trone, Adam Richardson and Mary, Destiny Fields, Emily Fields, Kenneth Richardson, Shawn Strickland, Tonya Fields, JJ Fields, Dylan Fields, Justin Richardson, Kaitlyn Richardson, Angel Beasley and Nathan Richardson.
David proudly served his country as a scout in the Special Forces during the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1973. His time in service instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism and a commitment to helping others. This commitment extended far beyond his military service; he selflessly dedicated countless hours to fundraising and supporting various school functions, including the school band and AFJROTC. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Beyond his dedication to community, David found immense joy in simpler pleasures. He loved fishing, spending time with his beloved family, and immersing himself in the world of science fiction, particularly the Star Wars saga. He will be remembered for his kind heart, generous spirit, and the unwavering love he shared with his family and friends.
