On March 3, 2020, Charles R. Mayer, 89, passed away surrounded by his family. Born July 11, 1930 in New York City to Marion Randel Sawyer and Charles George Mayer, Charles (Chaz) led an exceptional life, filled with adventure. Charles’ love of music and singing began early and developed while he attended the Choir School at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York, NY. He graduated from St. Paul’s School, Concord, NH in 1947 and attended Harvard University. He served in the CIA in the US and Europe from 1949 – 56. Charles studied at the Washington College of Law and passed the Bar in Washington DC, Massachusetts, and Florida. In 1960, he settled his family in Lakeland, Florida where he began a law practice that flourished for over 50 years.
Throughout his life Charles continued his passion for music and song, serving as President of the Imperial Polk Symphony for many years. He was a member of the SPEBSQSA Barber Shop Quartet, participated in several productions of the Lakeland Little Theatre, and was a member of the congregation and active choir member at All Saints Episcopal Church. Charles’ adventurous spirit allowed him to enjoy various activities including being a licensed airplane pilot, a certified scuba diver, a zealous racer in auto cross and road rallies, and traveling. He later became a founding member and legal advisor for the Ang Bisaya of Florida and Filipino American Association of Polk County.
Charles is survived by his wife Ann Mayer, his children Sarah Yorke (Tom), Peter Mayer, Timothy Mayer, Angelique Tan (Ben), Anisette Mayer, and his grandchildren Hannah Mayer, Angus Mayer, Marion Mayer, and Anya Clark.
