Obituary Viewed 771 timesAlan J. Hancock, 75, of Jacksonville, FL, died on November 18, 2020 at Baptist Medical Center South. He
was born on April 19,1945 to James and Ethel Hancock of Graham, NC. He graduated from Walter V.
Williams High School in Burlington, NC in 1963 and from St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC in
1967. After graduation from college, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army including a tour in Vietnam as a
Scout Dog Handler. During his service in Vietnam, SGT Hancock was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star.
He held management positions with Burlington Industries and Bibb Company and was later employed by
The Internal Revenue Service in Atlanta, GA and Jacksonville, FL.
For the last fifty years, Alan was a member and active volunteer with the U.S. Junior Chamber of
Commerce (Jaycees) and its honorary association of USJCI Senators in South Carolina, Georgia, and
Florida holding local, state, and national offices.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Emily Gober Hancock,
of Jacksonville; his sister Faith Hancock Marshall of Garfield, Arkansas; six children: Catherine Hancock
Waddell (Tim) of Dawsonville, GA; Sarah Hancock Griggs (Scott) of Dawsonville, GA; Phillip Hancock
(Tiffany) of Statham, GA; Martha Barrett (Terry) of Eatonton, GA; David Glover of Maryville, TN; and
Robert Glover (Misty) of Milledgeville, GA; sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
